- A violin outfit. This should include the proper size violin for your child, the proper size bow (with real horsehair, not synthetic), a cake of rosin, and a violin case. I highly recommend avoiding online auction sites for violins. You never know what condition the violin will be in when you receive it. It may cost more to make the violin playable than it's worth. Try visiting the shops listed in the sidebar (to the right of your screen) for rental outfits and violins to purchase.
